This list of words should be practiced throughout the reading program until all the words are mastered. Mastered words can be reviewed periodically. When one word is “retired” or mastered, a new word can take its place. You can have 5 to 20 sight word flash cards at a time depending on the age and ability of the reader. The two most common sight word lists are the Dolch sight word list (220 words) and the Fry sight word list (1000 words). Many of the sight words do not follow the phonics rules and need to be memorized in order to maintain fluency and comprehension when reading.
